Wreck Diving in the Philippines

Wreck scuba diving in the Philippines has been popular since World War II, when many boats from the Japanese Imperial Navy were sunk around the Philippines by the USA. In fact, every year thousands of people go on scuba diving vacations to the Philippines to see these wrecks.

There are certain scuba diving travel destinations that are more popular than others, due to a greater number of more interesting dives. Coron Bay is one of the favored diving resorts, not just in the Philippines but in all of South East Asia due to an abundance of wrecks in that area, many of which are in good condition. It is located in the Busuanga islands in North Palawan. It has twelve sunken ships all in conditions suitable for diving and clear water, giving great visibility. The best diving season in Coron is from May to October, when visibility is at its highest and underwater conditions are perfect. This is also the time when the best tropical marine life can be seen.

The best known diving site around Coron is the Olympia Maru, an old Japanese warship sunk during the Second World War and it is largely still intact, making for a very interesting dive. Due to its great size, the ship could only be fully explored in two or more individual dives. It is filled with exotic marine life and to many it is the best area to go wreck diving in the Philippines.

Many people interested in diving in the Coron Bay area do not choose to stay on Coron Island but instead stay on the tiny Filipino island of Sangat, approximately two kilometers away from Coron Island. Sangat is a popular choice of tourist resort as the tourist trade there is aimed almost entirely at divers, with the facilities to meet diver’s needs.

With a wide number of diving courses available in Coron, such as the PADI Dive Center, it is a good place to learn to dive from the many instructors available for hire. Many of the boats from the Japanese fleet were sunk in this area and some of them are quite easy dives, suitable for beginners, although there are others which may only be suitable for more experienced divers.

Coron features many other attractions to divers and tourists alike with limestone cliffs, unspoiled beaches and freshwater lakes with hot springs.

One of the fastest growing water sports in the world is underwater exploration. When many more people discover scuba diving the more people elaborate on their discovery of life underwater. With the abundance of marine life from famous sharks and gentle dolphins to the colorful rainbows encountered in schools of tropical fish. People discover scuba diving can allow them to be up close and personal with this uncomparable other world.

Far removed from the surface world, even snorkeling in shallow waters around ocean reefs can offer glimpses of another kingdom, but when people discover scuba diving they can realize that a whole new world awaits discovery. Possibly inspired by undersea movies and television shows, the interest in scuba diving is expanding around the world and a lot of vacation resorts offer visitors the chance to discover scuba diving through short sessions underwater.

Human’s are not meant to breathe under water and while portable air tanks can provide needed oxygen, it is easy to become disoriented in unfamiliar surroundings, but instructors can assist people discover scuba diving in a safe and controlled environment. Beginners can learn the sport through swimming in pools under close supervision prior to moving into larger bodies of water. After merely a few short lessons people can be on their way to discovering magnificent new worlds.

Being A Superior Swimmer Is Not Mandatory

While it helps to know how to swim, it is not essential to discover scuba diving. Knowledge of a couple of swimming strokes can help people learn to maneuver underwater, but for extensive diving additional lessons and experience will be required. Safety is the prime concern for scuba diving instructors. Along with classroom education practical experience will be required prior to being allowed into deeper water.

Most would like to discover scuba diving to be able to witness first hand the splendor of the sights available underwater. Encountering the marine life in its natural habitat and being able to swim with the fish can be an exciting part of being below the surface. The silence and solitude of being below the water may also create life-threatening situations. Therefore when people discover scuba diving they are likewise discovering how fragile their life above the surface can be.

Those planning a vacation at a resort where lessons are available, can have a much more memorable vacation if they discover scuba diving. This will enable them to experience more of the underwater world than they could ever hope to see through films and pictures.
